Remus Lupin has light brown hair which seems to be greying slightly. He has scars across his face that he received years ago; the night he was attacked and changed to a werewolf. Those scars cannot be healed by magic. Though still quite young, he often looks sickly and exhausted which tends to make him seem older. He's a tall man, standing at about 6'4, but never stands straight; he hunches, hands relaxed in the pockets of the oversized, normally patched, robes he wears. Hidden under those cardigan sweaters and tweed garments is a thin frame with surprising strength and a musculature that seems almost out of place given the look of him.

History:

Bitten by werewolf Fenrir Greyback when he was only seven years old; Remus barely remembers what life was like before he was infected with lycanthropy. His father was a Pure-blooded wizard himself who married a muggle woman. (Which was part of his father's offense to Lord Voldemort which in fact lead to the attack on young Remus.

Because of his condition, he kept to himself in his youth--never making any friends. His parents feared that no Wizarding school would accept their son, regardless of his obviously budding skills, because he would be a danger to other students. But, in summer he would have received an invitation (his parents held their breath) he was given something even better: a personal visit from the Headmaster.

Albus was the first wizard beyond his parents who didn't look down at him or pity him about his condition. He didn't shake his head or tell Lupin how 'sorry he was', 'what a shame it was', or asked his parents about what 'a handful' he must be. No, when Dumbledore first saw him he'd smiled and offered him a chocolate and a promise that there would always be room for him at Hogwarts as long as he was Headmaster and as long as Remus wanted it. From that day onwards, there would never be a man that Lupin put more of his faith in then Albus Dumbledore.

In Hogsmeade, a building (soon nicknamed the 'Shrieking Shack' and believed to be haunted) was erected, and a secret tunnel was constructed connecting it to an entrance beneath the Whomping Willow. This was all put in place so that once a month Remus would have a place to go. He could deal with his lycanthropy in a protected, contained way where he would have his privacy and be no danger to anyone. During Lupin's first year, Dumbledore actually spent the full moons that fell close to the beginning of the year with the boy. Albus taught him what he could; helped him get aquainted with the steps he would need to take, and Remus would always be grateful for this.

It was after one of these few moons that Remus Lupin made his first friend. For the most part, Remus kept up the same habits he had in his youth: isolation, activities like reading, and drawing. One one such occasion he was hunched in a chair drawing a unicorn with charcoal when a taller, much more extroverted leaned over him and said two things: 'That's a nice drawing, mate' and 'How in Merlin's name did you get that blood cut on your hand?'.

That boy was James Potter. Remus lied about the cut, thanked him for the compliment, and for that day onwards Potter seemed to claim Lupin as one of his friends. Through Potter he met Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew, and together the four of them made up 'The Marauders.' Their own exclusive group within the walls of Gryffindor.
